The Tradition Continues...

The original owners of the deli were Jerry Feldstein and Harvey Kull. They moved their original deli from Brooklyn, New York to East Brunswick, New Jersey. The pair were eventually approached by Saul Hornick, the mayor of Marlboro from 1980 to 1991, to move the business to Marlboro. Feldstein—thinking it was a good idea since most Brooklynites were landing in the area—opened the existing location in 1983. Kull left the business in 1993. Fred Merkin took over as owner on March 1, 2016.

After graduating from the prestigious culinary school Johnson and Wales University, Providence, Rhode Island, Fred was a chef for ten years. When his first son was born, he left the food business. “Chefs work nights, weekends and holidays,” Fred explains. “I want to raise my children.” After his youngest son graduated college, Fred’s dream of owning a Jewish deli was realized when he took over Jerry & Harvey’s. Fred is always eager to tell his unabridged version if you are interested and have the time to hear it—just ask!

Fred was a customer of Jerry & Harvey’s for many years before purchasing. “I am a people person and very social. As a result, I really get to know my customers. I have a wonderful staff that has been here for a very long time. My chef and manager have been here for over 25 years. My head waitress, over 32 years. I am supported by great people. With that being said, I see the deli continuing to grow and serve the community for many years to come.”

“Make sure you introduce yourself to me when you are here so I can get to know you. If you don’t happen to see what you want on the menu, please ask your server. We will do our very best to satisfy your craving. And lastly, but most importantly, I want all who enter as guests to leave as friends.”
